Optics powers the technology we use every day, from cameras and smartphones to lasers and medical devices. At MCC, you won’t just read about it in a textbook—you’ll learn by doing it. In each of our three Optics programs, you’ll build and test precision optical components using state-of-the-art industry equipment, gaining the skills you need to step directly into a technology-driven career in a rapidly growing field. 

What You’ll Learn

Across MCC’s Optics programs, you’ll learn how to:  

  • Work with precision optical components like lenses, mirrors, and lasers 
  • Use advanced tools and equipment to measure and test optical systems 
  • Perform optical fabrication processes such as grinding, polishing, and finishing 
  • Apply quality control and inspection methods to ensure accuracy 
  • Understand how light behaves in modern optical and photonic systems 
  • Use computer controlled (CNC) technology in manufacturing processes 
  • Assemble and evaluate complete optical systems 
  • Build the technical and problem-solving skills needed for real‑world production environments

A.A.S.

Optical Systems Technology Associate of Applied Science

This degree program provides training on industry-standard optical systems and advanced manufacturing techniques. You’ll gain practical experience in areas such as system evaluation, electro-optic configuration, precision measurements, and testing—skills that are needed across research, design, manufacturing, quality control, and more. You’ll be well prepared for immediate employment as an optical systems technician or ready to transfer to a four-year bachelor’s degree program.

Optical Systems Technology Certificate

Whether you’re looking to break into the industry or enhance your current career, this certificate program equips you with the technical skills needed to manufacture, inspect, and test optical components used in products like consumer electronics, eyeglasses, telescopes, and cameras. You’ll gain expertise in areas like manufacturing, testing, and electro-optics, preparing you for roles such as precision optics manufacturing technician, optics technician, and optical assembly technician.

Optical Fabrication Essentials

This three-course program gives you the essential skills you need to be job-ready right away. This program can provide a fast path into the optics industry, with an opportunity to advance more rapidly in your career. Plus, the courses in this program can be applied to MCC’s Optical Systems Technology certificate and A.A.S. degree programs.

Credits earned through the microcredential can be applied toward either the certificate or degree program, and certificate coursework can support continued study toward the associate degree.

The Engineering Technologies Electronic Learning Center is available for students in Construction, Electrical, Mechanical, Robotics & Automation, and Optical Technology courses.
