If writing excites you, MCC’s Creative Writing A.A. program gives you the chance to make it a meaningful part of your life. You’ll explore fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and other genres while learning from professors who are published writers themselves. Along the way, you’ll connect with other student writers, strengthen your craft, and discover real opportunities to share and publish your work—both in Rochester and beyond. This program also prepares you to transfer smoothly into a four‑year Creative Writing or English degree at top SUNY schools and respected universities.

What You’ll Learn

 In MCC’s Creative Writing program, you’ll learn how to: 

  • Analyze and evaluate creative writing across genres.  
  • Draft, revise, and edit your own original work in fiction, poetry, and other forms.  
  • Produce polished, professional‑quality pieces ready for publication.  
  • Explore multiple genres and writing pathways—including academic, professional, and creative writing.  
  • Submit your work to professional venues and learn about publishing opportunities in Rochester and across the country.  
  • Build foundational writing and literature skills that support successful transfer to bachelor’s programs.

Program Details

Develop your voice as a writer with MCC’s Creative Writing A.A. program. Explore multiple genres, learn from published faculty, and prepare to transfer into a four‑year English or Creative Writing program.

Associate of Arts

This program helps you develop your creative voice, sharpen your writing skills, and prepare for transfer into a four‑year Creative Writing or English degree. In addition to writing-intensive courses, you’ll study literature and have the opportunity to take elective classes in philosophy, history, political science, and more. 

Length

2 years / 60 credit hours
Students typically complete this program in 4 semesters of full-time study.

Student Writing Contests

Bring your imagination to MCC’s Annual Creative Writing Contest. Students can submit an original short story of up to 3,000 words or a single poem of up to 60 lines to showcase their voice, style, and creativity. Winning pieces earn tuition‑credit prizes and publication in Cabbages & Kings.
